Changes in the Pause space on Berwyn

Pause Coffee house (1107 W. Berwyn Ave.) is closed as of this morning and the message in the photo was on their chalkboard outside. It sounds like they're going to go away for a while and return under new ownership as Kitchen Sink Cafe. You can also follow them on Twitter.

Well, I hope it reopens soon. That's a weird block and it was too bad when the flower shop closed. That shoe store is just odd. The stereo shop looks empty. The barber and Pause were the stalwarts and it would help Steep if there were some more active businesses there. I'm still wondering how the furniture store just west of the Berwyn El survives. Their little cafe setup is kind of comical.

Ugh. Not good. This is the only business that constantly has people sitting in the windows and coming and going into the evening. It helps keep the street safe. Jane Jacob's "eyes on the street" theory is one of the most important things to keeping a neighborhood safe and livable. Now this block will be deserted after the few other businesses close in the early evening.

former pause baristas Ally and Jeff will be reopening the space in early december (we hope!) as kitchen sink cafe. we'll still be serving tasty metropolis coffee drinks and will have an expanded food selection (including gourmet sandwiches and breakfast)!

hold tight, support another independent cafe in the meantime, and follow us on twitter and our blog!

thanks for your support!

I will be THRILLED to have someplace to get breakfast so close to my apartment. It is no fun walking over to Andersonville in subzero windchill on the weekend to get out of my place and have breakfast.

Yes it is empty on the street. I am glad there is a shoe store and the barber shop, and the shoe store has authentic women's cowboy boots and you can do layaway. That doesn't seem wierd to me. Perhaps I am too urban and not judgemental of someone trying to bring business to Berwyn. Hopped Up I guess your too cool for Edgewater's Berwyn.

I really like the show store actually. They have pretty cool shoes and other stuff and the prices are not outrageous.

If the CTA would clean up the Berwyn red line station then the rest of the block would follow!!

I was kinda upset when Pause closed, but it really is exciting to hear that they will be expanding. But I also agree about the remaining businesses, the "furniture" store has been reduced to the yard sale store, selling everything from smoothies to oil paintings of Michael Jackson. And let's not talk about the useless shoe store that has never had a customer OR the laundromat with the suspended food license. This block needs a major upgrade.

I think the Berwyn station is about as cleaned up as it's ever going to the get with the recent rehab upstairs and the redone lobby. The sidewalk right outside of the station could still use some work. It's too bad Dr. Wax left the shop next to the station, but given that there are empty stores not under the tracks, I suppose that's never going to get filled.
