A 226-year-old Januarius Gagliano violin was stolen from a house in the 5200 block of North Wayne Ave. sometime between midnight and 7 a.m. this past Tuesday. Professional violinist Lori Ashikawa and her husband were asleep when someone entered their home with a spare key that had been hidden outside of the residence. Ashikawa said the violin was left on a table after she had finished practicing. She also indicated that the instrument, its case and 2 bows were the only items missing. Violin dealer Geoffrey Fushi places the value of the violin "in the hundred thousand dollar range."Police encourage anyone with information to call Belmont Area detectives at (312) 744-8263.

7 million?!
Maybe not...
"The value of that violin these days would be in the hundred thousand dollar range," said violin dealer Geoffrey Fushi.
Still very expensive, yes. $ucks, but it wasn't very well protected.
Thanks for the correction Kevin, I think I misread that the first time around.
This all sounds very far fetched. I live right around the corner from this supposed residence. Is it a "bad" neighborhood? No. Are you a fool for leaving a spare key to your home outside in this neighborhood? YES. There is an abundance of undesirables hanging out everywhere and it seems to be tolerated.
Sounds like an insurance scam to me. I'm in the business. Hopefully it was properly insured. Even so, this will be classified as a very highly chargeable incident (i.e. no breaking and entering). Premiums will skyrocket.
Foolish to say the least. Absolutely foolish.
Wow, accusing her of an insurance scam? Stay classy, Mr/s. Anonymous.
I'm in the business too, and I make it a point not to rush to judgement. And anyone with a violin worth several hundred thousand dollars is most likely going to have a special endorsement on their homeowners policy to address that specific item.
Chargable? You're kidding, right? Unless you're privy to facts not in the article, you're just making wild accusations. And I find it difficult to believe that their homeowners carrier is going to be offering renewal if they pay on this claim. Their premiums will be higher with someone else for sure, but almost certainly not with the same carrier.
I hope your insurance career is limited to accounting or HR and has nothing to do with claims, sales or any sort of customer service.
There was no breaking and entering. Period.
Mr. "Insurance scam": if you knew the hearts of musicians, they would never trade in money for a beloved instrument. And plus, this couple doesn't need to for any reason. Keep your judgmental side for your own type of people.
the weird part is ive delivered food in for them, they always order at calo's.
Multiple mortgages on a piece of real estate worth 1/2 of it's "appraised" value. These stories go on and on and on and on........
I just discovered my Rolls up on blocks at the corner of Berwyn & Foster.
There goes the neighborhood!
Oh, wait --- that was Wayne & Foster. I better get my story right before contacting the police.
