We just received word that Tomboy has closed its doors for good last week. The place never seemed to be super busy recently, so this doesn't come as a complete surprise to me. However, I did enjoy the spot, with their creative menu and funky/contemporary atmosphere. Tomboy will be missed!p.s. I over heard some people talking about their closure at a near by establishment. One person commented - "I bet Mary's is happy." Does anyone know if there was a rift between the two establishments or does Mary's have plans to expland?

Thank God. Hopefully the generally nice area can shake this "tomboy" image and just "be".
Mary's is purchasing their space, hence the comment.
My understanding of the closure is they've tired of the restaurant business.
Marginal businesses are floundering all over. The proprietors of this one might well be just "tired" of massive outflows of money for expenses vs minimum income and evaporating profits, as the economy contracts further.
I expect many more local businesses will flounder in the near future, and that we will see many Big Box type businesses consolidate substantially.
I'm glad another business is quickly moving into the space vacated by the departure of this business.
In the current dismal environment, I only hope that the commercial landlords get some sense, and make some real concessions in rents to their tenants to help them keep going. The rents for spaces even on Broadway are many miles north of outrageous, and the city is looking for more ways to tax, according to my acquaintances who own small businesses.
Mary's was approached by Tomboy to take over their lease. Marys will expand their dining area into the Tomboy space and Marys Attic will be used for special events and private parties.
Sad to see Tomboy close since they were one of the few higher end restaurants in Andersonville 10 years ago. But it always looked empty recently and their 3-course specials weren't drawing people in, it seems.
The North Coast - I wouldn't read too much of the economy into this one, necessarily.
I believe the same couple also owned and operated The Room/South, and The Speakeasy Supper Club, both of which they quietly closed down over the past 5 years.
A contraction like that, over that time period, looks a lot more like someone who simply didn't have their heart in it any longer.
It's high time "Andersonville" realizes that a $27 plate of spaghetti can be boiled at home for $1.09 whether you have a kitchen or not in your "gut-rehab". The name "Tomboy" turned me off but I was willing to give them a try. After viewing the prices on their window menu vs. the offerings.....no thanks! Get real Chicago. I mentioned the former laundrymat (sp?) (vacant for what 1.5 years now?) is prime space for a Taco Bell w/drive thru....at least you'd know what you're getting for your hard earned $$$$.
For the record, that "Spaghetti" entree that Tomboy served was fantastic.
A wonderful garlic, white wine, and oil sauce tossed with a ton of shrimp and vegetables. It was superb.

This is not true. Jodi Andre owned all of these to include Tomboy. She sold Tomboy to the current owners as she moved on to open and close the other establishments listed.
GOOD RIDDANCE. What a rip-off.
